ABOUT

Joanne Massey handcrafted sterling silver poppy necklace

My Story

Before discovering my true passion for jewellery, I studied art and ceramics and went on to complete a BA (Hons) degree in Fashion Design. I worked in the mass production clothing industry after graduating, adding knitwear designer to my portfolio before launching my own clothing label in 2005.

As much as I loved fashion design, I always felt deep down I hadn't chosen the right path. I began experimenting with different creative mediums and attended classes at Westhope Craft College. It was there I spotted a Silver Jewellery taster weekend — and on a whim, I booked it.

That weekend changed everything. I made several pieces — one for myself, and one for my mother, which she still wears today. I loved the subject so much I enrolled on their City & Guilds course, studying alongside full-time work. I gave it every spare moment I had, and was awarded a Distinction, along with both college awards over my two years of study.

My Craft

City & Guilds Silver Jewellery — Distinction
BA (Hons) Fashion Design

I design and handcraft my jewellery to the highest possible standards from my studio workshop on the Welsh/Shropshire border. My work is highly decorative, bold, individual and stylish. I use 925 sterling silver and genuine gemstones, sourced from reputable suppliers who ethically source their products.

My influences come from textures and shapes in nature — from woodland walks to visits to the Welsh coast, always accompanied by my Border Collie.

I consider myself a perfectionist. I will work on a piece for many hours until I am fully satisfied with the final result. I treat each item as a piece of wearable art.

My Values

I believe jewellery is deeply personal — something that holds fond memories and can last a lifetime and beyond, if cared for correctly. I love hearing the stories behind each purchase: who a piece was bought for, and why. That connection between maker and wearer is at the heart of everything I do.

It has always been my dream to run my own business — designing and making in my own little workshop, with my dog for company every day. Every sale helps make that dream a reality. One day, we hope to move the studio to the Welsh coast for daily beach walks together.
